Membership
St John’s Episcopal Church is located in a residential neighborhood in the South Park area of Charlotte, with demographics representative of the affluent southeast part of the city. However, our diverse geographic and denominational backgrounds form a “mix of people” that parishioners appreciate.
Our members span the full spectrum of ages, with young families (parents under 50 years of age with two to three children) experiencing the most rapid growth—due in part to our vibrant children and youth ministries. Parishioners value the age diversity at St. John’s because “it gives everyone someone to relate to.”
Although we are a large church, we have a “strong sense of community.” Members describe St. John’s as “feeling small” because of the many opportunities to get involved, “have a good time,” and “form rich relationships with each other.”
In a recent parish survey, 18% of respondents identified themselves as theologically conservative; 28% as moderate to conservative; 26% as moderate; 16% as moderate to liberal; 7% as liberal; and 5% as unsure. 90% of survey participants preferred traditional worship services.
Our parishioners hold diverse viewpoints about social, political, and theological issues facing Episcopalians today. Despite these challenges, members express a deep desire to “keep our church family together,” and to individually grow in our spiritual journey. St. John’s is deeply committed to outreach and to the needs of our own members. Worshiping, deepening our relationship with God, gathering for fellowship, and serving together in the cause of Christ—all are part of what makes us a thriving church.
