Fellowship & Hospitality

Opportunities for fun and getting acquainted

Bread of Life:

Volunteers periodically bake six mini-loaves of lemon, chocolate chip or banana bread to be put into the visitor "welcome bags" in order to provide a warm welcome to our newcomers. Kits, with all packaging materials (no yeast!), are provided by the church. This is a simple way to serve the church and fill your home with a lovely aroma too!

Episcopal Church Women (ECW):

ECW arranges monthly events for women of all ages at St. John’s to gather together and do Christ’s ministry through our church community. ECW offers a variety of day and evening programs. Come and learn from speakers, participate in outreach activities, walk and observe through tours, or join us for good conversation over a meal. Participating in any of the events will provide us all with opportunities for fellowship,
ministry, and spiritual growth.

Greeters:

Greeters provide a friendly face at the door to greet our visitors before and after Sunday morning worship services. This ministry is for you if you can periodically offer a few minutes of hospitality and direction to our guests. "I was a stranger and you invited me in," Matthew 25: 35.

Kitchen and Food Ministries:

If you enjoy cooking and have always wanted to spend time in a big commercial kitchen, St. John‘s has a wonderful
opportunity for you to have fun and serve others at the same time. Volunteers are always needed, and appreciated, to help cook, serve and clean up for the many parish occasions when we share meals and fellowship. The Sunday morning breakfast team hopes to grow its ranks. From 6 to 7:30 am you can be a "Prep Cook", at 7:30 to 9:30 am you can cook and serve or help in the dish room and with clean-up. On Wednesday evenings during the school year, you may volunteer from 6 to 7:30 pm in the dish room or help with cleaning up the Parish Hall and kitchen.

Periodic deep cleaning of the kitchen is done several times each year, and helping hands are needed to scrub, wipe down, and make the kitchen clean and fresh. As well, many parishioners have given beautiful silverware to St. John‘s, and help is needed to polish it periodically. No special training needed for any of these activities, just time and patience.

Men’s Lunch Bunch:

We are a group of men, mostly over 50…some of us WAY over… who meet once a month for conversation, fun, fellowship and a delicious “sandwich lunch” prepared by our own Jo Brock. We meet on the last Monday of each month. The gathering officially starts at 11am in room 309 (the Youth game room). Guys wander in anytime after that and we spend time talking, swapping lies or playing pool or a video game. We eat at noon, and most of us are out of there no later than 1:30pm. We have no stated purpose or mission except fellowship. Some of our members have decided to make themselves available to assist other members with transportation needs, but doing that is certainly not a requirement for membership.

New Member Integration:

There are several opportunities to help integrate newcomers into the life of St. John‘s. The Newcomer Committee helps guide the procedures involved in fully integrating newcomers into parish life: including newcomer coffees, new member receptions, greeter events, and other events designed to help transform the visitor into a full member of the St. John's church family.

The Paper Trailers is a team of folks whose talents run toward the administrative side of things and help with the integration process paperwork.

The only qualification for either of these opportunities is that you can identify with this scripture from Hebrews: "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have entertained angels without knowing it."

Prime Timers:

The Prime Timers of St. John‘s was formed in the mid-1980‘s by a few longstanding members of the church, due to a recognized need to bring together empty nesters, pre and post -retirees and other interested parties for spiritual
fulfillment and fellowship. The group morphed into a regular meeting on the third Sunday of each month, usually gathering for lunch. Prime Timers now has approximately 100 people, with more coming each year. There is a governing board made up of a president, secretary, treasurer, hospitality chair, program chair and communications
chair. All board members are appointed to serve from June 1 through May 31 each year. The group charges nominal dues (in 2010 $10.00 per person) designated to provide gifts for program speakers and other related luncheon items. At the end of the year, usually in May, the Prime Timers come together for an annual picnic. This is a celebration of the end of another fun filled year. The Prime Timers group is open to all church members who want to share fellowship and caring for others both within and outside the church. Come join the fun!

Shepherd Ministry:

This ministry was in hibernation for a while, but we want it to become a viable ministry once more. If you are interested in "shepherding" a new person or family into parish life, please call! This is not a big time or energy
commitment, but can be very rewarding.

Sigma (formerly NYPT, Not Yet Prime Timers):

Sigma is somewhere between Alpha and Omega. Sigma is open to all adults. The membership consists primarily of adults whose children are grown. Many Sigma members still work, but some are already retired. The group enjoys evenings out and meet monthly in a member’s home for fellowship.
