Theology: Faith Seeking Underdstanding

10am, Tilson Hall

The purpose of this class is to guide the participants through the modern theological landscape. While students will certainly gather theological knowledge, the intent of the class is to give the students theological tools so that they might more actively and critically engage the Christian life. We will use the Nicene Creed as our template for enquiry though some doctrines will be covered at other times for the sake of clarity. Each class is designed to stand on its own and no prior theological training is required. Each class is lecture-based but there is plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Centering Prayer:

Centering Prayer is a method of prayer which prepares us to receive the gift of God‘s presence. It is traditionally called contemplative prayer. Centering Prayer facilitates the movement from more active prayer — verbal, mental, or affective prayer — into a receptive prayer of "resting" in God. It is a prayer of silence, an experience of God‘s presence as the Ground in which our being is rooted, the very source from whom our life emerges. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts a new light and depth of meaning on them. It is at the same time a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him. There are two Centering Prayer groups at St. John‘s; Mondays at 8:10 am and Tuesdays at 11:15 am. Each group meets for approximately 30 minutes in the parlor.

Cursillo:

Cursillo is a movement of the church that helps people understand their individual callings as Christian leaders. The leadership may be exercised in work situations, in the family and social life, in leisure activities, and within the Church environment. Leadership, in Cursillo, does not mean power over others, but influence on others; all of us need to be aware that we can exert a positive influence on those around us. The goal of Cursillo is the goal of the Church: to bring all to Christ. This is done when informed, trained leaders set out with the support of others having a similar commitment. Cursillo helps to renew and deepen Christian commitment. Many people have said Cursillo provides an important learning experience which causes them to feel like newly made Christians with a purpose and with support.

Education for Ministry (EfM):

EfM is a four year course in theology and spiritual reflection offered through the University of the South School of Theology. Participants register for only one year at a time. The seminar group is the nucleus of the EfM program. A group consists of 6 to 12 participants and a trained mentor who meet weekly over the course of a 9-month academic year. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God‘s kingdom. St. John‘s newest EfM class began in August 2010.
