St. John's Episcopal Church

Loving the Lord. Serving His people.

Meet the Vestry

The vestry is in essence the equivalent of the board of directors or board of trustees for the parish. The rector and clergy are responsible for pastoral care and worship, while the vestry acts on behalf of the congregation to manage the operational side of the parish. The rector acts as chair of the vestry. Members of the vestry are elected by the congregation at the annual meeting of the parish, typically in November of each year. The senior warden is appointed by the rector. The junior warden is elected from among the vestry by its members and serves as the representative of the congregation on the vestry - the "people's warden." Each member of the vestry is assigned the responsibility of acting as a liaison with a commission for a specific part of parish life.

  • Kurt Kottkamp: Clerk, Class of 2011

Karen and I have been at St John’s for about 10 years. I remember visiting St John’s on the Sunday when the high school seniors speak, and seeing what an impact St John’s and the youth program had on them, and we recognized that’s what we wanted for our kids. Our family, we have 2 children: Megan 13 and Mitch 11, has enjoyed a wide variety of opportunities at St John’s: Alpha, bible studies, Something’s Brewing, Senior High Sunday school, Living Last Supper, Room in the Inn, EYC, ECW, Greeters, Scouts and now serving on the vestry. I really enjoy getting to meet parishioners I might not get to know, except through a common outreach or service opportunity.

    Kate Hindin

I love the Lord! Church for me is a major part of expressing and passing on that love through worship, service and fellowship. I have been an active member of St. John's for 10 years. My husband David and I have been married for 23 years and we have four children ranging in age from 20 to 6! We joined after moving here from Maryland, instantly felt at home and have not looked back! I am involved in EYC, the Intercessory Prayer Group, LIFT and the Monday Morning Bible Study, the Altar Guild and Confirmation Class. If I had to capture what it is that draws me to St. John's, it is family, God's family. My family is global, with 4 siblings on 4 continents, my church family and our community reminds me of our higher purpose, to serve and celebrate Christ. I have countless opportunities to do that here at St. John's.

    Brian Phillips

A member of St. John’s for 8 years, my activities include Men’s Bible Study, Overnight Host for Room in the Inn, Den Leader with Cub Scout Pack 116. Over the past year and a half as Finance Committee chairman, I have learned the importance of marrying my financial management experience with spiritual discernment. Receiving the word of God through St. John’s has allowed my
family and me to grow spiritually as we never did before. The Vestry allows me to draw upon the talents God has provided me to help guide the operations of St. John’s so that others, including future generations, can share in spreading of God’s word through St. John’s.

  • Mike Simpson: Class of 2010

    Mike Simpson

My first Sunday at St. John's was Marty McCarthy's first Sunday as well - in August, 1995. Thus, Amanda and I have been attending St. John's for a little more than 14 years. During that time, I have served in the following ministries: Choir; Stewardship Committee; Adult Education Committee; Buildings and Grounds Committee; EYC Advisor; Costa Rica Mission Trip; Teacher: Confirmation Class (12 years); Teacher: Lenten Series - Cast of the Crucifixion; Living Last Supper; Vestry (2 terms); Junior Warden; Diocesan Convention Delegate; Rector Search Committee - Fr. Paul Winton. I am a cradle Episcopalian. St. John's is special to me as a wonderful church in which to raise my family and as an Episcopal church that has an excellent balance of most of the elements of a Christian life - worship, fellowship, and mission. It is my belief that we could improve in the areas of evangelism and spiritual development.

  • Kim Hoben: Class of 2011

    Kim Hoben

I have considered St. John’s my church family for 37 years. Even when living in Chapel Hill, NC I continued to return home to visit my parents (also current St. John’s members) and attend St. John’s regularly. Over the past eleven years, St. John’s has been a spiritual hub for my husband, Michael and my three boys, Seth, Collin and Bryce. At St. Johns, I have been confirmed, married, baptized three of my children, planned and attended my grandmother’s funeral, and attended two of my children’s first communions. Recently, I have been a member of the Rector Search Committee for Father Paul, a Senior High Sunday School Teacher, along with my husband, VBS Leader, a member of Guild of the Christ Child, as well as involved at St. John’s Preschool. Being on the rector search committee was a spiritual and emotional journey. I truly believe God had led us to call the right rector to lead St. John’s going forward. I’m excited to help in Father Paul’s transition to St. Johns and to help him become familiar with our church and its parishioners. My family and I are committed to St. John’s and look forward helping it grow during even the most challenging times.
