St. John's Choir Programs

The choirs of St. John's are always recruiting new members.  We have choirs for bell ringers and singers of all ages, from 5-85!  With seven choir offerings for members and friends of St. John's Church there is definitely one that is right for you.  Vocal coaching is now provided for all of our singing choirs by Ms. Jane Orrell.  Please come and join us!  For more information contact Alan Reed at 704-366-3034 to learn about a choir for you or your child today!

The Choir Retreat at Kanuga
Adult & Teen Choirs

The Shepherd Choir, for teens and adults who sing alto, tenor, and bass with the Treble Youth Choir, meets in the choir room each Wednesday, beginning August 27, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. and usually sings at the 8:45 service on Sundays. This choir offers the opportunity for the whole family to sing together!  Alan Reed directs this choir, and Jane Orrell acts as voice coach.

St. John's Choir for teens and adults includes sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. Alan Reed directs the group in the choir room each Thursday, beginning August 28, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  The choir usually sings for the 11:15 a.m. service on Sundays. Voice coaching for choir members is offered by Jane Orrell.  This choir participates in a combined Evensong Choir with the choirs of St. Peter's, St. Martin's, and Christ Church on Sunday afternoons each choir season and enjoys an annual retreat to Kanuga to prepare for Christmas.  Come join us!

Summer choir meets each week of the summer at 9:00 a.m. to prepare for the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service.  No weekday rehearsal or commitment is involved.  Just drop by on the Sundays that you are in town, and join in!  Singers ages 9-89 are welcome to participate on summer Sundays.

Handbell Choirs

St. John's has three excellent opportunities for people interested in participating in the Handbell Choir.  All three Handbell Choirs are directed by Chip Carter, and give a great opportunity to contribute musically to our services.

The Youth Handbell Choir is a handbell choir that meets on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:00 pm.  The St. John Bells is a handbell choir for teens and adults that meets on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  New members are welcome.  The St. John Ringers is a handbell choir for teens and adults that meets on Tuesdays from 7:45 to 9:00 p.m.  New members are welcome here also.  Contact Chip Carter at 704-542-3729 to join.  For general information about handbell and handchime music, visit the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR) web site.

Children & Youth Choirs

The Cherub Choir, boys and girls, kindergarten through second grade, meets in the children's chapel each Wednesday of the school year from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m.  Introductory musical activities prepare youngsters for future musical experiences.  This choir sings an anthem as the prelude to the 8:45 and 11:15 services once a month.  Jane Orrell, our Assistant Director of Music Ministries, directs this choir.

The Treble Youth Choir, for treble boys and girls, third through twelfth grades, meets in the choir room each Wednesday of the school year, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. under the direction of Alan Reed with voice coach Jane Orrell.  If you have a Wednesday conflict, alternative rehearsals are available from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.  This choir usually sings the offertory anthem for the 8:45 a.m. service on Sundays alone or with the Shepherd Choir.  Choristers learn music reading, Bible, and liturgical and vocal skills through the Royal School of Church Music training scheme, and members may participate in the Royal School of Church Music summer courses.  St. John's began sponsoring a summer training course in June 2004.  The next course will be July 6-12, 2009.  Please click here for more information about the 2009 course.
